Folsom Public Library is hosting their third annual Lego Building Contest. All ages are invited to submit their best original creation from January 21-25 or stop by to select their favorite on January 25 from 2-4 p.m. For more info and submission guidelines, visit folsom.ca.us/library

El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency’s Family Caregiver Support program is hosting a free Aging & Caregiver Mini Series on January 27 (“Dementia Conversations”), February 3 (“Managing Stress for Caregiver”), and February 10 (“Caring for the Caregiver: Mindful Self Care”). The educational classes are from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Cameron Park Community Services District, and participants may attend one or all of them. Classes are free, but donations are encouraged. Join Main Street Yoga in Placerville for Mantra Night on January 4 and February 1 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Music to lift your spirits and clear your mind will play while guests enjoy refreshments. This is a free event, and kids are welcome.

Through January 6, the City of Rocklin is encouraging people to recycle their Christmas trees at Johnson-Springview Park and Twin Oaks Park

Applications are currently being accepted to become a Senior Peer Counselor in El Dorado County. Those 55 years and up are invited to apply. Training begins in March. For more info, call 530-621-6304. 

Learn how to make fettuccini and work by hand to make bowtie pasta at the Murer House’s Pasta Fatta in Casa (Homemade Pasta) with Bertilla class on January 11 from 10 a.m. to noon. Capturing Wakamatsu: A Poetry Walk/Workshop


On January 5 from 1-3 p.m., American River Conservancy is hosting Capturing Wakamatsu: A Poetry Walk/Workshop. Led by Taylor Graham, El Dorado County’s first Poet Laureate, and Katy Brown, award-winning Sacramento-area poet, participants will be guided on a nature walk and then write a poem inspired by what they’ve experienced. Children eight and older are welcome with adult supervision. A donation of $5 (members) and $10 (non-members) is requested. To sign up, email [email protected].

Rocklin Girls Fast Pitch Softball League—a recreational league established for girls ages 5-16 in the City of Rocklin—is celebrating their 20th anniversary. If you’re looking to improve your green thumb, don’t miss UCCE Master Gardeners of Sacramento County’s Pruning Workshop. On January 18 from 9 a.m.-noon, head to the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center and learn how to master the art of caring for your fruit trees, blueberries, cane berries, and grape vines. [ People & Places in the News ]

The Folsom City Council selected Sarah Aquino as mayor and Ernie Sheldon as vice mayor at the December 10 City Council meeting. Aquino was elected to the Folsom City Council in 2018 and also serves on the Citizens’ Advisory Committee for Folsom State Prison and California State Prison, Sacramento. Sheldon is a 34-year resident of Folsom who is well-known for his extensive service to the community.

Pacific Workplaces, a San Francisco-based coworking company, is opening a location in Roseville. The space will have on-site stafff and a locally based answering center for those leasing. 

Congrats to the Roseville Area Chamber of Commerce for being awarded a prestigious five-Star accreditation by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for their sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community. In order to receive Accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, and technology; Roseville Area Chamber received perfect scores in six of the nine sections and is the only five-star chamber in Northern California.

Ryan Sumida completed his Eagle Scout project


Ryan Sumida completed his Eagle Scout project, which consisted of installing a pathway using decomposed granite and flagstones and building a bench for Golden Hills School’s learning garden in El Dorado Hills. The 13-year-old received advice from local landscaper Dick Welch from Ponderosa Landscaping and help from more than 25 people.

After 32 years of friendly competition, Morningside Florist has acquired Roses & Bows Florist. Since its inception in 1987, Morningside has provided flowers for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, funerals, and other occasions. All business will be conducted from Morningside’s location at 11170 Sun Center Drive, Suite 110, in Rancho Cordova.

Placer Community Foundation


Placer Community Foundation granted $5,000 to the Downtown Lincoln Association to support revitalization efforts. Gifts came from the Community Needs Fund and the Elizabeth M. Jansen Fund. 

Congrats to El Dorado Hills Community Services District for being honored with the 2019 Exceptional Public Outreach and Advocacy Award for their demonstration of increasing the district’s visibility with the public, legislature, and other key stakeholders in the community.

Elly Award-winning Fairytale Town Troupers are holding auditions on January 27 for two shows this season. The program is open to youth ages 5-18, and no theatrical experience is required. Audition appointments are required. For more info, email [email protected].

Starting January 14, Blue Line Arts is offering Petite Picasso classes. The six-week session is designed for ages 4-6 to explore their own creativity and imagination using different art materials, such as acrylic paint, watercolors, printmaking, and more. From January 16-March 5, the Gallery at 48 Natoma is hosting Mid-California Highlights: From the Sierra to the Sea, an exhibit featuring painting and sculptures from the California Art Club that highlight our state’s beauty.

Starting January 8 and running for 12 weeks, Rocklin Community Theatre is offering a Musical Theatre Dance Class for ages 8-15 where students will learn original Broadway choreography from all styles of musical theatre, such as ballet and jazz. Locally based fitness studio, Climb Society—featuring Summit Power Tower machines for a full-body, low-impact climbing workout that encompasses strength training, endurance, agility, and overall health—has opened at 2750 East Bidwell Street, Suite 150, in Folsom’s Broadstone Marketplace. The state-of-the-art studio offers seven different class variations, in addition to cryotherapy services.

Prospector’s Plaza in Placerville is slated to receive a makeover this year, including new lighting, landscaping, paving, and building façades. A Target is also scheduled to open, in addition to several other retail stores, including Mattress Firm and Bath & Body Works. The 243,000-square-foot shopping center is located off Missouri Flat Road and is one of the largest in El Dorado County. 

Row House—a rowing studio with locations across the U.S., including one in Folsom, gives a 45-minute, calorie-burning, full-body workout in an inclusive environment—and is opening a location in Roseville at 1911 Douglas Boulevard.

Fenton Herriott Vineyards—a family-owned winery with a long-standing tasting room in Placerville—is taking over the Underground Tasting Room in Old Sacramento (900 Second Street), which currently sells tastings, bottles, and glasses from Rendez-vous Winery and Twisted Twig Winery.

VibesUP is opening a new restaurant, Enchanted Forest, on Main Street in Downtown Placerville. The Celtic-themed spot is slated to open this summer next door to VibesUP and will feature fondue, crêpes, pizza, and more.

If you’ve never tried wine directly from the barrel, Holly’s Hill Vineyard is giving you the chance on January 18-19 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Winemakers Carrie and Josh will guide you through the 2019 Patriarche components (Mourvedre, Syrah, Grenache and Counoise) from the barrel and the 2018 Patriarche (bottled but not released). 

Farmer’s Delicatessen and Bakery


Cameron Park’s Farmer’s Delicatessen and Bakery—a scratch kitchen known for their Hungarian and Romanian specialties, including made-to-order sandwiches on artisan breads, baked goods (many vegan and sugar- or gluten-free), soups, salads, locally roasted coffee, and more—has new hours: Tuesday thru Sunday from 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Claimstake Brewing Co. is slated to be the new concessionaire for Cordova Golf Course. The 1,000-square-foot space, plus an outdoor seating area, will serve burgers, sandwiches, brunch fare, and beer.
