Ask the Experts What Are Some Ways I Can Get Over My Fears of Swimming?

Q: What’s the difference between an IPA and Pale Ale?
A: Pale ale is a type of beer that is brewed with mostly pale malts for a more equal malt-to-hop ratio. The greater amount of pale malts causes the beer to have a lighter color and flavor. IPA stands for India Pale Ale, a hoppy style of beer within the pale ale category. Double IPAs, also called Imperial IPAs, are a more hoppy style of IPAs with alcohol content above 7.5 percent by volume.

Q: What are some ways I can get over my fears of swimming?
A: Breath Control! Developing breath control is crucial in getting over your fear of swimming. Working on breath control skills such as holding your breath or blowing bubbles underwater can help calm the anxiety of swimming while at the same time help with getting comfortable putting your face in the water and learning to swim. These breath control skills can be practiced at first with your feet on the bottom of the pool and slowly lowering yourself into the water and popping back up. We refer to this skill as underwater bobs. As you advance, these skills can be used in learning to swim in a prone, horizontal position.
