What's Up In June: The Newest Awards, Events, and Announcements from El Dorado County to Roseville

Through June 27, peruse beautiful waterscape paintings from nationally acclaimed painters Carolyn Lord, Karen Anable-Nichols, and Susan Sarback at the Gallery at 48 Natoma’s exhibit California Waterscapes. In the adjacent Community Exhibition Gallery at 48 Natoma, the El Dorado Hills Arts Association is displaying their annual 2019 Open Studio Tour Preview, featuring local artists. Head to Blue Line Arts every second Saturday (June 8) from 1-2 p.m. for Artist 2 Artist Meetup. Make new art friends, air your artistic grievances, listen and learn from each others’ experiences, and develop into a true professional with the help of fellow creatives. Join El Dorado County Poet Laureate Suzanne Roberts at the El Dorado Hills Library on June 12 at 5:30 p.m. where she will be joined by local poets for a free poetry reading and open mic session. For more info, visit artsandcultureeldorado.org/laureate-trail.

Through September 1, the Folsom History Museum is showcasing The Chinese Legacy in Folsom, an exhibit that features an in-depth look at Folsom’s Chinese population and how their experiences changed the city’s cultural and physical landscape.

Ages 8-12 are invited to create out-of-this world projects at Blue Line Arts’ A Space Odyssey Adventure Camp from June 17-21. Participants will be able to use their imagination to design a rocket ship for intergalactic space travel, paint the constellations, and create drawings of astronauts, aliens, and more. Cracker Barrel—a homey restaurant serving American comfort food with an onsite general store—is coming to Rocklin in November! The approximately 10,000-square-foot space, including a front porch with their beloved rockers, will seat 180 guests and be located at 4660 Sierra College Boulevard.

World Traveler Coffee Roasters


A new wine bar is coming to 9050 Fairway Drive, Suite 105, in Roseville. Platinum Wine Lounge plans to offer a regularly rotating list of the most luscious and affordable wines that aren’t available anywhere else other than the wineries they hail from. Opening date is TBD. 

Ohio-based Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream is opening soon at 1011 East Bidwell Street, Suite 123, in Folsom. Patrons can expect daily-made ice cream in flavors like banana cream pie and blueberry cobbler, along with shakes, hand-packed quarts, and sundaes.

Older adults (55+) are invited to attend a Sacramento River Cats game on June 18. The bus departs Raley’s at 9:30 a.m. (Placerville) and 10 a.m. (El Dorado Hills); before the game, enjoy an all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet. Gold Country Wildlife Rescue


Gold Country Wildlife Rescue (GCWR) is seeking the assistance of dedicated individuals to help support animals in need. Volunteers and interns will have the unique opportunity to learn about the natural histories and caretaking procedures for dozens of wildlife species. No previous animal experience is required. Historic Folsom’s Hometown Parade


Come out for some old-fashioned fun at Historic Folsom’s Hometown Parade on June 29 at 9:30 a.m. The route begins on Scott Street and travels down Sutter Street to Reading Street. Plan to hang around after the parade for lunch, a cold beverage, and shopping. 

Sierra Wildlife Rescue in Diamond Springs is looking for volunteers ages 16+ for their baby bird nursery. Hands-on training is available every Wednesday at 5 p.m. To register, call 530-642-1800.


[ PEOPLE & PLACES IN THE NEWS ]

Congrats to Whitney High School’s Broadcast Program, who sent 68 students to Seattle in March to compete in Student Television Network’s annual convention and earned the nation’s top honor for Broadcast Excellence in the “Taped Daily” and “Broadcast Morning Show” categories. In total, the program earned two first place and five total awards.

History was made on May 4 when ultrarunner Jim Walmsley set the new 50-mile world record at 4:50:08 (5:48/mile) from Folsom to Sacramento. NorCalUltras and HOKA ONE ONE partnered to create the attempt—dubbed Project Carbon X—which marked the launch of the Carbon X, a racing shoe. 

The California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA), Division 73 of El Dorado County, recently awarded five, $400 mini grants to teachers in El Dorado County. Chapter President Tim Smith noted, “Every year teachers submit outstanding applications. Out of 50 entries, we were privileged to award five grants to support these innovative and engaging educators.”

Folsom native Ryan Robinson—a professional highliner and adventure athlete—for setting a world record on May 4 in front of hundreds of astonished eyes, as he crossed 1,919 feet on a one-inch-wide slackline stretched from Lake Natoma Crossing to the Rainbow Bridge. Robinson’s accomplishment was part of the centennial celebration of Rainbow Bridge.

Congrats to Camino resident Charlie Downs for being honored with Arts & Culture El Dorado’s Normadene Carpenter Award 2019. Downs has worked in the architecture field since the early ’70s; and served on numerous boards, committees, and commissions in the area. His architectural projects—especially those at hospitals and schools—have touched innumerable lives, and his approach to healthy, energy-efficient buildings reflect his commitment to environmental stewardship. Downs will be presented with the award at a celebration on June 11 from 6-8 p.m. at Boeger Winery. Ground has officially been broken on Roseville’s Placer Valley Sports and Event Center. Once completed, the complex will feature an additional 160,000 square feet of indoor sports space and be able to host large-scale happenings like concerts, trade shows, and sporting events like the Junior Olympic Level 9 Western Championship for USA Gymnastics next May.
