Take a Hike: Darrington Trail

Darrington Trail

Getting There: Take Highway 50 East, exit El Dorado Hills Boulevard, and continue straight onto Salmon Falls Road. Parking will be on the left (Darrington Trail Parking Lot).

Distance: Approximately 16 miles, out-and-back; 1,374 feet in elevation gain.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate.

Know Before You Go: Dog-friendly (must be leashed); mountain biking allowed; parking is $10; open year-round.

Fuel Up: Grab an early breakfast treat at Bakerie & Latte Chateau Arme (2222 Francisco Drive, Suite 500, El Dorado Hills), and reward yourself after at Mraz Brewing Company (2222 Francisco Drive, Suite 510, El Dorado Hills) where they offer award-winning beers and allow you to BYO food from nearby restaurants like Asian Bistro and Cascada Restaurant & Cantina.

Why We Love It: Fairly challenging; follows the American River into Folsom Lake, allowing river and lake access; can stay on trail for as little or as long as you like; great for hikers, runners, and mountain bikers.

Trail Notes: Wear shoes with traction, dress in layers, bring extra water and snacks, and, as always, pack out what you pack in. Remember to keep to the right, and that hikers have the right of way over mountain bikers.
