A magical winter wonderland awaits guests at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary’s ninth annual Wild Nights and Holiday Lights event. Many hours of work by volunteers and city staff went into installing the lights, decorations, and displays that have transformed the zoo into a winter wonderland. Attendees can expect thousands of feet of bright, colorful light strands, countless sparkling ornaments and trees (donated by Bambi’s Tree Lot), lighted animal figures, and seasonal displays. The highly talented technical theater students from Folsom High School’s drama department even created a Sierra snowscape that’s on display at the canid deck.

In order to enhance the experience for both visitors and animals alike, zookeepers provide enrichment—special treats or food tucked into specially wrapped boxes or other containers—for some of the creatures; what’s more, docents are on hand to share their knowledge and provide fun facts and animal anecdotes. The event also provides a chance to see how many of the animals behave after dark.  

The new Barnyard Experience serves as the event’s entrance where guests are invited to visit with animals like Gus the horse and miniature donkeys Rosie and Hallie. A special seat awaits Santa Claus, who will drop by as his busy schedule permits. The zoo mascot, Santa Paws, is also available each night to pose for photo ops, as local caroling groups and musicians bring the merry sounds of the season. Kids and adults can also avail of the Folsom Valley Railway miniature live steam train, which provides special nighttime rides.

The best part? All proceeds benefit the animals at Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary.
