Foodie Find: Shorty's Doughnuts

Shingle Springs, 530-677-7963, sugarlilliebakery.com/shorty-s-doughnuts.

Shingle Springs-based Sugar Lillie Bakery—famous for their to-die-for coconut macaroons—just released the newest addition to their thriving confectionery: Shorty’s Doughnuts. A vintage ’70s step van, the namesake “Shorty” is a fun food truck that can bring pastry chef Morgan Hunter’s decadent doughnuts straight to you. These are not your average pink box creations, as Hunter produces unique flavor combinations such as Butter & Salt (a glazed buttermilk doughnut with a perfect salty-sweet balance) and The Peachy (a brioche doughnut with a bourbon peach glaze and peach dust). Flavors change monthly and according to season, but on a recent visit to their storefront (currently open on Fridays from 7 a.m. till sold out), I indulged in a Vanilla Cake Doughnut that was anything but basic. With either buttermilk or brioche as a base, Shorty’s manages to be both light in consistency and dense, without the overly fried taste of traditional doughnuts. The vanilla cake offering was sweet, satisfying, and topped with a heap of rainbow sprinkles that had my inner kid smiling gleefully. Shorty’s menu also offers coffee and mochi ice cream, and you can follow them on Instagram (@shortysdoughnuts) to find their next pop-up location. Alternatively, hire them directly for your next special event, as Shorty’s will be a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
