What's Up in El Dorado County, August 2018

Lean Up is a life-changing fitness, wellness, and weight loss program for people who have struggled to achieve a healthier lifestyle—and it’s free! The program begins September 10 at El Dorado Hills Sports Club and Broadstone Racquet Club but is limited to 225 participants. To learn more and apply (deadline is August 31), visit leanup.net.

Head to American River Conservancy’s new multi-use trail near Salmon Falls Ranch on August 31 from 9 a.m. to noon to pick up litter, assist with weeding/planting, and other maintenance. Volunteers should bring a pair of work/garden gloves, a full water bottle, and lunch. Knight Foundry


Sutter Creek’s Knight Foundry celebrated reaching their goal of raising over $300,000 to continue restoration on the historic water-powered foundry and machine shop. Guided and self-guided tours of the site are available on the second Saturday of each month. For more info, visit knightfoundry.com/sutter-creek-historic-site-events.

Each year, the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce offers scholarships to graduating seniors who plan to continue their education by attending a university, community college, or vocational school. Scholarships are based on 50 percent community service, 15 percent work experience and extracurricular activities, and 10 percent scholastic GPA and financial need. This year’s awards—four, $750 scholarships—went to Taylor Czasnojc, Nicholas Stolecki, Maegan Cope, and Samantha Reed.

Congrats to Marshall Medical Center for receiving Healthgrades’ 2018 Outstanding Patient Experience Award. This distinction recognizes Marshall among the top 10 percent of hospitals nationwide for patient experience and was only one of two hospitals in the area to have to receive the award.

Mraz Brewing


The California State Fair recognized some of the region’s best wines, beers, cheeses, and olive oils. Congrats to Somerset’s Gwinllan Estate for winning Best of Show for their sparkling wine and Mraz Brewing Company for winning Brewer of the Year, in addition to five other medals.

On August 12 from 4-6 p.m., head to the El Dorado Hills Town Center for a meet and greet with the Oak Ridge High School football team as they prepare to kick off their 2018 season. Attendees can meet the players, watch a performance by the cheer and dance teams, and witness a hot dog eating contest between players and coaches.

Male employees from Blue Shield of California in El Dorado Hills walked a mile in red stilettos to raise awareness for the victims of domestic violence in May. Last year, the office raised over $43,000 for domestic violence victims to support The Center for Violence-Free Relationships.

Looking for a reason to pick up some great non-fiction books this summer? The Non-Fiction Book Club of El Dorado County meets at noon on the third Tuesday of every month at the Cameron Park Library.
