News and Events in the Roseville and Rocklin Communities

Jun 27, 2017 04:51PM ● By Style

As the city began budget preparations this spring for the next fiscal year (which begins this month), all City of Roseville General Fund departments (parks, recreation and libraries, police, fire, public works and development services) were asked to develop a net zero budget. The challenge of a flat budget is that they needed to reduce services to absorb increasing costs and unfunded mandates.

In addition, they were asked to make recommendations to help close the $2 million projected budget gap. Throughout the process, many scenarios were examined—all with the goal of balancing fiscal soundness and minimizing impacts to customers. In the end, the council approved the following reductions.

• Lessen non-routine tree maintenance (anything outside of the regular pruning cycle of once every 6.5 years)

• Eliminate goat grazing in General Fund areas

• Close libraries and Maidu Museum and Historic Site on Fridays

• Program reductions (one concert and some Town Square programs)

• Reduce digital library materials

• Eliminate Fourth of July fireworks (beginning in 2018)

• Outsource library phone customer service

• Reduce help desk coverage at Riley Library

• Eliminate childcare for fitness members

• Eliminate two vacant positions

While the goal was to minimize customer impacts, there were changes to customer experiences and service levels, which will ultimately help toward providing services within the city’s means.

Summer Lovin’

Soak up the sunshine and take part in this month’s medley of community events.

FREE MOVIE FRIDAY
Looking for a perfect way to discuss your favorite Nemo and Dory moments with your neighbors during a warm summer evening? Rocklin continues its Free Movie Fridays with Finding Dory at Johnson-Springview Park on July 7. The film begins at dark; bring snacks and a blanket.

COMEDY UNDER THE STARS

Make it a night of family-friendly comedy on July 21 at the Platinum Living Amphitheater at Quarry Park. Local comedians Stephen B., Carlos Rodriguez and D. Tyler are offering their best outdoor performances from 7-10 p.m. Bring a blanket and your sense of humor for a great night of entertainment.

GATHER
Imagine walking through Quarry Park as the breeze flows through the trees and you taste artisan food, view creative art and hear live music at the Platinum Living Amphitheater. That’s just some of what you can expect at Gather. The city has partnered with Unseen Heroes to bring this free community event from 5-9 p.m. on July 27 (and every succeeding fourth Thursday through October).

SPORTS PROGRAMS
Get the kids active and outdoors this summer! Rocklin has partnered with Skyhawks Sports Academy, National Academy of Athletics, and Vision Soccer Training to offer various sports programs. There’s also a junior sports academy where youngsters (ages 4-6) will build hand-eye coordination and motor skills while having fun playing flag football and capture the flag, and going through obstacles.

STAIRWAY TO STARDOM
This educational music program introduces what it takes to create a band. During the two-month course, middle-to-high-school-aged children learn how to create, develop and perform original music on a professional level. A panel of specialists and pros then judge performances during the live concert, held at Platinum Living Amphitheater on July 30.
