Royal Siam in Rocklin

Green curry with beef

In what has become the “world cuisine” corner of Rocklin—where within half a mile, one can choose between Vietnamese, Italian, BBQ, Southern, Indian, American, Hawaiian, Mexican or Turkish fare—sits newly opened Royal Siam.

The restaurant has filled the void for tasty Thai with an impressive array of familiar favorites, and a few surprises. I began with Shrimp in a Blanket, featuring deep-fried marinated shrimp in an egg roll wrapper with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. Each bite delivered a nice crunch, thanks to a not-overly battered coating that’s favored in many establishments.

Next was the surprise: eggplant salad with shrimp— grilled eggplant, onion, fresh mint and cilantro, and plenty of large, succulent shrimp in a tantalizing lime dressing.

The BBQ pork entrée was another surprise—not because it can’t be found on other Thai menus, but because of the chop’s quality, which was thicker and meatier than most. Reflecting on other Asian-style pork chops I’ve enjoyed (or not), these were far and away the best. Tender with a slight char, it was almost entirely devoid of the pervasive fat and gristle I’m often “treated” to. Served with a generous portion of steamed vegetables, it’s a perfect entrée for people watching their carbs.

For those with a need to feed their curry craving, I recommend the green curry with beef—medium heat at least! Strips of subtly spiced beef, sweet basil, bamboo shoots, eggplant and bell peppers, all soaking in a soul-warming coconut milk broth, was Thai comfort food at its finest. Follow my lead and make it a kitchen sink affair by spooning the curry over a heaping portion of pineapple fried rice. Fragrant with a touch of sweetness, the symphony of rice, pineapple, cashews, raisins, carrots, chicken, onion and shrimp was satisfying solo, but adding the spicy curry elevated it to another level.

The large dining area features ample, comfortable seating, and the staff is pleasant and attentive. Come by and check out the new kid on the block—I’m betting you’ll make a new friend.
