How does socializing help my child's development?

Many experts believe it’s critical. Dr. Richard Lerner from Tufts University, for example, theorizes that optimal human development includes individuals who can reciprocate (give and receive mutually) with themselves, and with their families, communities and society. If we agree, then we see that socializing isn’t just a benefit to child development—it’s the goal itself! The ability to form healthy relationships in life is something we all want for our children, and experts tell us that the first place a child learns to relate to people is in the home. A young child who can build rapport with others is on track for success in school. Socializing is also a great way for children to learn new skills and grow cognitively; it allows them to “push the envelope” in trying new things that might otherwise be beyond their developmental reach.
