Getting Fit with Fido

Happy New Year!  Are you making resolutions this year? Many people like to set new personal goals for the coming year. Fitness is one of the most popular ones. If you want to get in shape this year, why not include your pup in your plans?

Running

Dogs can make great jogging buddies! Just be sure not to overexert your pooch. Brachycephalic dogs, which are those pups with the adorable pushed-in faces, lose their breath easily, so shouldn’t be encouraged to run. Senior dogs, puppies, and little dogs are also not good candidates for jogging. Check with your vet first. If you get the green light, start Fido out slowly to build his endurance.

Walking

Walking is a great way for Fido to get his daily activity quota. It’s good for you, too! To burn more calories, alternate your pace, tackle some hills, or fit in an extra walk each day.

Hiking

Our furry pals love exploring. Take Fido on a fun excursion on some local trails. Just remember to bring plenty of water with you, and make sure your pooch is current on his shots and parasite control products.

Floor Work

Do you work out at home? Include Fido in your routine. Toss him a toy to fetch while you do sit-ups, or hold out one of his playthings so he can jump for it as you do squats.

Games

Exercise can be fun, especially when your workout buddy is a dog! Ramp up your games of fetch to burn more calories. While Fido is running after his ball or stick, run in place, or do jumping jacks. Tag is another fun way to work out with your pooch: take turns chasing your dog, and having him chase you.

Other Options

Swimming, agility work, and dancing are also lots of fun to do with dogs! You can even try doga, which is, as you may have guessed, yoga with dogs.

Safety

Vigorous exercise isn’t safe or suitable for every dog. Your dog’s activity requirements will depend on his age, breed, weight, and health. Ask your vet for advice before starting your pooch on an exercise regimen.
