Folsom Zoo Spotlight: Meet the Turkey Vultures

Dec 30, 2016 11:07AM ● By David Norby

You may see turkey vultures—a bird that’s been protected in the U.S. since 1918—catching updraft winds as they “hunt from above” in the Folsom area. Also called buzzards, these remarkable animals can float on six-foot wings searching for prey below and have good vision and an excellent sense of smell. These feathered fowl are partners for life, taking care of up to three chicks for about 40 days; one parent stays with the little ones while the other hunts and brings home carrion (dead animals). Swing by the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary to say hello to these unique creatures.
