If your pet is currently undergoing treatment for any painful or inflammatory processes, it may be in their interest for you to look into therapeutic laser treatments.  Utilizing laser therapy on tissues is a fairly new technology, but the most recent studies have shown that it has an even broader range of benefits than initially believed.

What does laser therapy treat?

Therapeutic laser can be used in any situation in which pain or inflammation occurs.  The laser is sterile, surgery-free, and drug-free, with no side effects whatsoever.  Because of this, it can be used alone or as a complementary treatment to practically any procedure or condition, including but not limited to soft tissue injuries, wounds, fractures, neurological conditions, dermatologic problems, and postoperative pain or swelling.

How does laser therapy work?

The laser handpiece delivers photons, which are concentrated particles of light, deep into the tissue cells.  Not only do these photons not cause damage; the cells actually absorb the photons, inducing a chemical change called photo-bio-modulation.  This increases production of ATP inside the cells.  Increased levels of ATP promote cellular growth, repair, and rejuvenation, which in turn lead to tissues that heal more rapidly and thoroughly from damage and trauma.  More rapid healing means less inflammation and more pain relief in surrounding tissues.

How will my pet tolerate treatment?

Laser treatments vary in time depending on the location and severity of disease being treated.  The handpiece emitting the photons is painless to the pet; in fact, it emits a gentle, soothing warmth.  Most patients respond by relaxing, even falling asleep, during their treatment.  The laser provides an almost immediate sense of relief, much like a gentle massage would provide to us, so anxiety is usually brought to a minimum very early on in the treatment.

What can I expect to see with my pet?

Some relief can often be seen during or after the first treatment as pain and inflammation reduction can provide immediate relief.  You may notice improved mobility, drying out of dermatologic conditions, more rapid healing of wounds or incisions, or just an overall sense of increased calm and well-being from your pet feeling more comfortable.  More severe conditions, such as broken bones, chronic arthritis, and severe deep wounds may require multiple treatments before a notable improvement is made.  Every patient is a bit different, and a treatment plan will be made for your specific pet’s case.
