Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

Tutoring has found me more than once. Many years ago, I was a volunteer tutor for inner-city children in Washington, DC; when I moved back home to California, I took a few classes at Folsom Lake College, and they asked me to be a tutor (where I still work as one). After tutoring with another private business for over 10 years, I finally got the opportunity to open my own tutoring business in 2011.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

My customers make up this community. I hope that my efforts help each and all to be successful. Additionally, I plant and tend a Community Pride native plant demonstration garden along Randolph/Hangtown Creek, which is shared with people walking on the bike trail. Amazing conversations begin with plants and a bit of dirt!

Why is your staff the best in the business?

We believe that positive encouragement is the best way to reach each of our students. We don’t just teach the subject—we teach the students to be comfortable with their own unique abilities.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

I go hiking and camping in the High Sierra.

What’s your biggest job perk?

My greatest joy is seeing the look on students’ faces when they “get it” and feel successful.

What’s your favorite childhood memory?

Camping with my family and Girl Scout troops in the Sierra.
What’s your favorite local business other than your own?

The Bookery—when I don’t have time to garden, hike or camp, I relax reading historical fiction.

If you could be any other profession, what would it be?

I would be an environmental biologist, because I love the outdoors.

What is your opinion of Style Magazine?

I’m glad we have Style Magazine to introduce us to our neighbors and all of the wonderful people and businesses that make up this community.
