One of life’s greatest joys is sushi. And as a public service announcement, I’d like to tell you that life is too short to eat “okay” sushi. Yuki Sushi in Cameron Park serves what I consider to be above par sushi, and you should go there right now.

My coworker and I recently stopped by for a workweek lunch. It’s a popular spot, as there were already quite a few diners. Now under new management, the interior is tastefully designed with an eye for Japanese minimalism and elegance, allowing you to imagine that you’re a little closer to Tokyo and a little further away from the Bel Air strip mall.

To kick off our noontime feast, we shared the Dragon Ball appetizer, which featured three spheres chock-full of finely chopped shrimp, spicy tuna, crab meat and mozzarella—all breaded in panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) and deep fried. Served piping hot and topped with an addicting sweet sauce, they were tender and delectable inside, and delightfully crunchy on the outside. I could have eaten a whole plate.

For my main course, I chose the Red Dragon roll, while my coworker opted for the Salmon Lover. The Red Dragon contained two pieces of tempura shrimp, cucumber and avocado inside, with tuna and a sweet, creamy wasabi sauce on top. It was a light, subtle roll and the crunch of the tempura added a palatable texture, made all the brighter by the sauce. The Salmon Lover contained crabmeat, cucumber, avocado, salmon and thin slices of refreshing lemon, with a drizzling of sweet wasabi sauce artfully decorating the top. The combo of lemon, buttery salmon and creamy avocado elevated the roll into a truly tasty culinary experience.

Not only is Yuki’s fare fresh and toothsome, it’s reasonably priced, too—which isn’t common for quality sushi. As a group you could easily share and enjoy a number of rolls without breaking the bank. Undoubtedly, I’ll be returning for lunch again soon, and if the weather ever cools down—I’ll be all over their spicy ramen!
