Local Wines Recognized at Recent Competition

The El Dorado County Fair invited commercial wineries from all areas to compete in the El Dorado County Open Wine Competition on Friday, May 15.

Thirty-four prestigious experts within the media, trade, hospitality and education industries from around the country came together to judge these wines this year. Assisting the judges were 33 backroom volunteers preparing wines to be judged.

More than 500 wines were judged in the competition from 81 wineries. Of them, 66 were awarded gold medals and 34, double golds (unanimous vote for gold).

The following top awards were given to local wineries:
  • Best of Show Barbera: Windwalker Vineyard and Winery, 2012 Barbera Dick Cooper Ranch
  • Best El Dorado Winemaker Award: Windwalker Vineyard and Winery, 2012 Barbera Dick Cooper Ranch
  • Frank Herbert Award, Best Zinfandel made with El Dorado or Fairplay appellation grapes: Illuminaire Winery, 2013 Zinfandel Thaddeus Vineyard
  • El Dorado Wine Grape Growers Award — Best wine made with grapes from El Dorado or Fairplay grapes awarded to vineyard and winery: Findleton Estate Winery & Vineyard and GMB Vineyard for Findleton Estate Winery & Vineyard, 2012 Cabernet Franc Young Vine/Old Vine GMB Vineyard
