Join Veterans' Voice Writing Workshop

Apr 21, 2015 11:54AM ● By Brenna Mc Gowan
Veterans’ Voices, an ongoing writing workshop for veterans, will resume on Thursday evening, April 30, at Placerville’s historic Fausel House.

This six-week workshop is an opportunity for veterans—in particular those who’ve served in Iraq and Afghanistan—to  write their stories, whether service related or not, vis-à-vis memoir, letter, poetry, fiction or drama.

The workshop will be led by award winning poet, screenwriter, and teaching artist Shawn Pittard, author of two books of poetry—These Rivers and Standing in the River.

Pittard’s screenplay, The Crossing, was a semifinalist in the CineStory Screenplay Contest, securing him representation with a Los Angeles movie producer. His extensive writing background and varied teaching experience—he’s led writing workshops for high school students, seniors and prison inmates—has earned Pittard a reputation as an outstanding writing coach and workshop leader.

Held on Thursdays from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m., Veterans’ Voices begins on April 30 and ends on June 4. Participants will meet on the second floor of the El Dorado Arts Council, located at 772 Pacific Street in Placerville.

FREE to all veterans, the workshop provides attendees with the skills to chronicle their experiences, translating thought and memory into the written word. Drop-ins are always encouraged and welcome.

Veterans’ Voices workshops are made possible through funding from the El Dorado Community Foundation, Faith Episcopal Church, Holy Trinity Parish, Poets & Writers, and generous private donations from community members.
