Does Your Body Need a Cleanse? Head to Roseville's Pressed Juicery

I’ve never been one for a liquid diet but am open to attempting almost anything once, so when given the opportunity to try a one-day cleanse from Pressed Juicery in Roseville, I gladly obliged. Since hangry is the name of the game when I go a few hours without eating, I opted to do the cleanse on a Monday—when I’d be alone in my cube (i.e., unable to get annoyed and/or bark at anyone) and fresh off a weekend of binging. Read on for the highs, lows and results...

7 a.m.

Instead of starting the day with my morning meal of oats (i.e., oatmeal, almond butter, banana, apple, cinnamon and a splash of soy) and a cup of coffee, I reach for Greens 2. Admittedly, the thought of “drinking” kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple and lemon upon wakening (or any time) makes me slightly nauseous, and the first couple of sips are rough, by mid-bottle it grows on me—and curbs my a.m. appetite for a few hours. Slightly tart from the lemon, but mainly sweet, I’m amazed how well the flavor of the veggies is masked.

9:30 a.m.
When the growling begins, I grab Greens 3, another St. Patrick’s Day-hued beverage with the same ingredients as my first drink (kale, spinach, romaine, parsley, cucumber, celery, apple and lemon), but with the addition of ginger. I can definitely taste the spicy kick of the ginger root, and guzzle it down without any issues.

1 p.m.

Work gets the best of me and, thankfully, takes my mind off munching, so I depart the office for a late “lunch.” Today’s noon-time meal means it’s time for the beverage I’ve been looking forward to all day: Vanilla Almond, a creamy, dessert-like concoction with almonds, dates, vanilla bean, sea salt and filtered water. The protein does my body well, while each sweet sip satiates my stomach; this is definitely the most filling, and tasty, of the bunch so far.

3 p.m.
By late afternoon my energy is starting to slump, but one sip of Citrus 2 and alertness overcomes me. The mélange of pineapple, lemon, apple and mint is like Hawaii in a bottle; refreshing, tangy and filled with phytonutrients, for a moment I imagine myself drinking it on a white-sand beach, infused with rum, and an umbrella coming out the top. Hey, one can daydream right?

6 p.m.
I make it to vinyasa yoga after work and, although I take it easier than I normally would, I’m surprised at my energy and lack of hunger. Next up is Roots 3; burgundy in color, it contains beets, apple, lemon and ginger. It definitely isn’t love at first sip, as the ginger really packs a biting punch, but the more I drink, the more it grows on me. According to Pressed Juicery’s website, this particular juice—thanks to the beets—helps your body to release stomach acid, which aids digestion. I’ll drink to that!

 8 p.m.

My last juice of the day is Lemon H2O, a pungent mixture of lemon, cayenne pepper and water—a drink often associated with the Master Cleanse. Hard as I try to stomach it down—and despite being a sucker for spice and a lover of lemon—I just can’t do it. I guess I didn’t save the best for last! The good news? I survived my first cleanse without collapsing, and surprisingly feel lighter and more rejuvenated than I have in…maybe forever.

FINAL THOUGHTS: As a pretty rigid person when it comes to my meals (three per day) and meal times, I was pleasantly surprised how well my body adjusted to solely drinking juice for 24 hours. My advice to those wanting to cross “cleanse” off their bucket list? Do it on a workday when you’ll be busy (less time to daydream about pizza and wine) and don’t have social obligations to tend to. While I don’t see myself cleansing on the reg, I do envision purchasing the juices solo, as a mid-day meal or healthy snack, and now know first-hand what the cold-pressed buzz is all about.
