Folsom Cake Decorator Wins First in National Competition

Frequent customers at Karen's Bakery and Cafe on Gold Lake Drive in Folsom already know the talent possessed by cake decorator Emily Pille. 

But now Pille's talents are being recognized all over the U.S. as she recently took the first prize in the two-day 14th annual Pillsbury National Cake Decorating Competition at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show. Pille won the overall championship while placing first in sculpted cakes and second in the wedding cake category. 

As the winner of the competition, Pille has claimed a $4,000 prize. 

“One of the things that judges are always looking for is the use of new and interesting techniques, and I think that is something we are very good at at the bakery," Karen's Bakery owner Karen Holmes told the Sacramento Bee

Pille, 33,  has been working at Karen's for six years. She is a native of Southern California, and went to culinary school in San Diego. She has been baking and decorating cakes for 13 years. She is the mother of three children.
