Even though it hasn’t been there in years, I always imagine the corner spot in the East Roseville Parkway and Sierra College Boulevard shopping center as a Coffee Republic, so when I found out my next culinary adventure was to that same locale, I was intrigued to see the newest iteration of the familiar shop.

A quick look at the underground-cool Scoreboards Pizza & Grill sets your expectation of the meal—cue lots of classic red brick, a set of trendy matte-black lockers backing the ample bar, and a large chalkboard themed to look like the eatery’s namesake while boasting current specials.

We settled at a roughly hewn wooden table, bathed in the glow of eight flat-screen TVs and looked over the faintly Americana menu (think chicken tenders and a club sandwich). The friendly servers in black jeans and branded grey T-shirts only added to the easygoing and distinctly casual vibe.

A few short minutes later, our mozzarella sticks arrived in all their fried glory. Though the dish itself feels a little juvenile, the execution was everything but. Well-seasoned breading coated fresh, high-quality melty cheese that was comfortingly warm and gooey good. A side of fresh and tangy marinara was the perfect accompaniment to the heavy starter.

The Classic Burger—a half-pound patty on a pretzel bun—was similarly well seasoned and juicier than we anticipated, and though the burgers normally come dry, you can order them with garlic aioli to bring the richness factor up a notch. Sharp Cheddar cheese and crunchy lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles made it a real mouthful. There’s no shortage of burger joints in the area, but this is definitely one I’ll revisit.

The Chicken Gourmet Pizza with spinach, garlic, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes was a delectably fresh creation—the spinach and mushroom giving the dish a satisfying earthy tone. The hearty dough (hand-tossed and made from scratch daily) was just crunchy enough to be toothsome.

We finished up with a delightful root beer float—sipping from two straws like a pair of giddy teens in a malt shop. In fact, the whole experience was a bit retro, but in the best way possible, and I have a feeling I’ll be visiting this slice of Americana quite a few more times.
