Stay safe when you’re cycling! The California Bicycle Coalition shares these five “Rules of the Road” bike safety tips from the League of American Cyclists:

1 / FOLLOW THE LAW

Cyclists and drivers have the same rights and duties so obey all traffic signals and stop at stop signs. Ride with traffic and use the rightmost lane headed in the direction you’re traveling.

2 / BE PREDICTABLE

Don’t force drivers and other cyclists to wonder what you’re going to do next. Instead ride in a straight line; don’t swerve between cars and obey turns signals. Be sure to check behind you well before turning or changing lanes.

3 / BE CONSPICUOUS

Make sure drivers can see you. Wear bright clothing; make eye contact with others and stay off the sidewalk. If visibility is poor, use a front white light, rear red light and reflectors.

4 / THINK  AHEAD

Do your best to anticipate what drivers, pedestrians and other cyclists will do next. Be on the lookout for debris, potholes and other hazards you need to avoid. Ride outside the door zone of parked cars and watch for cars that are turning.

5 / RIDE READY

Always wear a helmet. Make sure your bike is ready for the road too, including having tires with sufficient air, working brakes, a smooth working chain, and working quick release levers. Keep tools handy if you need to stop the ride to service your bike.
