From nightclubs to financial institutions, Nichole Lauren Fry’s work graces the walls of many local businesses, including Reunion Nightclub, District 30, Stone & Graves, Dutra & Oates, and JKB Financial. Her unique style combines oil paints with other mediums, creating pieces that both inspire the viewer and complement the design of various spaces.

AB: On your website you highlight Mark Rothko as being the most influential artist along your journey. How did his work shape your approach to your own art?

NLF: Before I ever dreamed of being an artist, I saw Mark Rothko at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. Something about his art stood apart from all the other paintings in the gallery. The reflection lines and two-toned schemes he painted were magical. I remember being particularly moved by a painting that only included a few colors. In relation to my work, I like to create paintings using no more than four or five colors. To create what I’ve envisioned, I use paintbrushes and straight edge tools. I like to see what kind of story plays out on the canvas; for me, the blending of colors happens only on the canvas with the tools, not before.

AB: How would you describe your artistic style?

NLF: I would describe my artistic style as textural and simplistic. I think texture is very important in art; it gives it originality. I tend to use basic colors and either smooth brushstrokes or strikingly harsh demarcations with the straight edge tools.

AB: Your work is displayed in many galleries and businesses throughout the area. Was this always part of your dream?

NLF: I would say yes, but it came about slowly. Each year, I try and reevaluate my goals to challenge myself. I think artists flourish when they’re pushed to an uncomfortable zone. I take on new projects with an open mind and try to bring something new to each piece.

AB: Do you feel you’ve realized your artistic goals, or are you still working toward them?

NLF: Expressing myself though art feeds my soul. Although I strive to be a successful artist, I hope that in my journey to get there, I give a little piece of the joy I derive from doing something I love to others.

AB: What advice would you give young artists?

NLF: There’s a quote by Orison Sweet Marden that’s posted on my refrigerator; I read it whenever I get discouraged and feel like throwing in the towel. “Find your purpose and fling your life out to it. Find a way, or make one. Try with all your might. Self-made, or never made.”
