Next time you’re enjoying the beautiful sights, and twists and turns along historic Highway 49, consider, ahem, cooling your heels in Cool—in particular at The Cork and Fork, run by Dennis Edwards of Xpressions Catering.
If it’s Southern-style barbecue you’re hankering for, this is the place to get your rib on, but if the cravings don’t stop there, they also have tri-tip sandwiches, burgers and even salads or wraps. Basically, whatever your heart (or stomach) desires, it’s likely you’ll find it—there’s even fish tacos, Southern-fried catfish, and fish and chips!
On a leisurely sunny Saturday, my husband and I decided to drop in for lunch. Inside, we found the atmosphere to be comfortable and classy, but not overdone; the blues music tells you you’re in barbecue town, so y’all can relax juuuust a little.
My husband opted to try the bacon Cheddar tri-tip sandwich with a side of onion rings, and I chose the Boston burger with criss-cut fries.
With owner Dennis being an experienced pitmaster (he learned the art at the age of 12 while living in Memphis and entered his first barbecue competition just six years later), we had a feeling that the tri-tip would be good. Good turned out to be an understatement, however. The meat was tender, juicy and flavorful, and if my husband hadn’t been so rude as to finish the whole thing I would have eaten it myself…along with my burger. The house-made onion rings were golden, crispy and huge, which is pretty much the only way you want onion rings to be, right?
The Boston burger came topped with onion rings (yay!) and Cheddar cheese, and on top of that they added horseradish sauce; needless to say, it delivered exactly the kind of kick one looks for when there’s horseradish involved. The burger itself was tender and flavorful and—consider this your warning—the criss-cut fries were ridiculously addictive.
On your next drive through Cool, stop in and get some great grub at The Cork and Fork—your appetite, and dining companions, will thank you.
