Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

While working in hotel management in the early ’80s, my hobby was a new sport called triathlon. I dreamed of becoming a “pro” and making a living training and racing, but soon realized I was better suited to teach others how to get fit and healthy. I became a certified aerobics instructor, personal trainer and triathlon coach—and then started Total Body Fitness (TBF), which offers personal training and multi-sport coaching.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

TBF supports local charitable organizations such as Girls on the Run Sacramento; works with community organizations like Folsom Auburn Trail Riders Action Coalition; helps youth organizations like Cycling Development; partners with business organizations like Dignity Health, Bicycles Plus and Spare Time Athletic Clubs; and encourages athletic groups such as the Sacramento and Elk Grove Triathlon Clubs.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

The staff and coaches of TBF Racing and TBF Training do what they do because of their passion for the multi-sport lifestyle. They love sharing that passion with customers and are rewarded by the sincere appreciation that comes pouring back from the athletes at our events.

Who is your role model in business or in life?

My wife is my role model in life; in business, I admire Dana White.

And finally, customer service is…?

All about knowing your customers—knowing their first names and who comes out to cheer them on at their events; knowing how to help them reach their goal and achieve a new personal record; knowing how great they feel hearing their name called at the finish line and then getting a free massage and hot, post-race food; and knowing how important it is for them to accomplish their fitness goal and improve their health. TBF knows that if you work out, everything else will too—and we strive to help all of our athletes achieve this balance in life.
