Bacon and Spinach Scramble with Hash Browns

At 7 a.m. on a recent Saturday, I found myself on Historic Main Street in Placerville, the county seat of El Dorado County—made famous by its gold rush days and history as “Hangtown.” Nestled on this quaint strip, close to the intersection with Clay Street, lies a Victorian house that’s home to a restaurant and bakery known as Sweetie Pie’s.
My dining partner and I picked a patio table closest to the entrance where there stands an artistically rendered sign emulating a window with open shutters, allowing passersby to see a big pie and giant green mug. Just a few feet from this sign sits a wooden bench carved with the words “Sweetie Pie’s.” Everything about the outdoor dining area—including the garden blooming with lavender, rosebushes and hydrangeas that’s bounded by low, rustic wrought iron fencing—is inviting.
As I’m sure other patrons would agree, however, ambiance is not the only inviting thing at Sweetie Pie’s. Service is done with a smile, and the menu features ample choices for breakfast—from traditional scrambles, omelettes, waffles and pancakes to specialty dishes, such as chile relleno casserole and huevos rancheros—and lunch offerings that are equally varied and appealing. Options for vegetarians, small eaters and those with hearty appetites are all available—ensuring no one feels left out.
Thanks to our server’s ability to readily answer questions and make recommendations, my dining partner and I ultimately opted for bacon and spinach two ways: I ordered the bacon and spinach scramble with hash browns, while my friend elected the bacon and spinach omelette with country potatoes. Both dishes not only looked appetizing, but proved scrumptious and filling.
Everything about our breakfast at Sweetie Pie’s was satisfying. I’m already anticipating my next visit, so I can taste more of the eatery’s scratch-made dishes and one of their claim-to-fame baked goods.
