Christmas trees can be the gift that keeps on giving if you chip them and turn them into compost or mulch.

Here’s how in your area:

Roseville/ Granite Bay

Remove all branches and cut the trunk into sizes small enough to fit within a green waste bin with the lid closed to be collected by the city of Roseville.

Take unflocked trees to one of three drop-off sites Saturday, Dec. 31, Sunday, Jan. 1, Saturday, Jan. 7 or Sunday, Jan. 8. The sites are Maidu Park at 1550 Maidu Drive, Mahany Park at 1545 Pleasant Grove Blvd. and Saugstad Park at 100 Buljan Drive in Roseville. After Jan. 8, dispose of your tree at the Western Regional Sanitary Landfill, between the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends at 3033 Fiddyment Road. For more information, visit www.wpwma.com.

Leave your tree for Roseville Boy Scouts. The scouts will pick up trees Saturday, Dec. 31, Sunday, Jan. 1, Saturday, Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8. Place your tree at the curb by 9 a.m. on the morning you want your tree picked up. Place a donation envelope on your door or porch (do not attach to tree). Tax-deductible donations cover Boy Scout summer camp costs. Cash or check accepted. Make checks payable to Boy Scouts of America. For Granite Bay residents, Boy Scouts will pick up trees in the area bordered by Cavitt Stallman Road, Sierra College Boulevard and the Placer County line on Saturday, Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8. Place the tree curbside by 10 a.m. and leave a $10 donation per tree in a plastic bag, check payable to Boy Scout Troop 121. They will also accept trees dropped off between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Miners Ravine Park, 7530 Auburn-Folsom Road, Saturday, Jan. 7 and Sunday, Jan. 8 for a $5 donation. Rocklin

For those who prefer to dispose of trees themselves, the City of Rocklin is offering disposal bins. Non-flocked trees without decorations/lights will be acceptable in the disposal bins. These bins will be located at Twin Oaks Park  and Johnson-Springview Park (in the parking area, behind the 5th Street Preschool).

Folsom

Remove all lights and decorations, however flocking is allowed. Take trees to Dan Russell Rodeo Arena 
Address: Folsom City Park, at the corner of Natoma and Stafford, Folsom 
Dates and hours: Sat Jan 5 and Sun Jan. 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You may also recycle your old Christmas light strands in the community recycle bin in the Walmart parking lot, 1018 Riley Street (near the Chevron).
Christmas lights must be bagged before placing in bin. Light bulbs do not need to be removed.

El Dorado Hills



El Dorado Hills residents may take part in a free tree-chipping event at the Community Park, north entrance, on Saturday, January 7 and Sunday, January 8, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. The El Dorado Hills Community Services District and El Dorado Disposal sponsor this event. It is free, but is open to El Dorado Hills residents only.

You can also recycle your non- foil wrapping paper. Wrapping paper can be dropped off at these recycling centers: 4421 Latrobe Road, El Dorado Hills; 580 Truck Street, Placerville; and behind Bel Air Market at 3510 Palmer Drive, Cameron Park.

Cameron Park

Cameron Park Community Services District Residents may drop off Christmas Trees between December 26th and February 14th at Cameron Park Lake, 2989 Cambridge Rd, in the lower paved parking lot (look for signs).

The park is open every day from 7:00 a.m. to dusk. Trees may be dropped off free of charge. These trees will be chipped and recycled. Please be sure to remove all lights and decorations. If you need assistance, or just do not have the time, please use the Boy Scouts troops 550 and 700. They will be leaving information on your door.

El Dorado County

Residents of El Dorado County may bring Christmas trees to Western El Dorado Recovery Systems (WERS) 4100 Throwita Way, Diamond Springs, CA, (530) 626-4141, for recycling. The maximum is two trees per vehicle and is scheduled for two days the first week in January.

Placerville

For Placerville residents El Dorado Disposal Service, (530) 626-4141, will pick up, on your normal collection day, your cut and bundled Christmas tree for an additional charge. Trees must be cut into pieces less than 3’ long and bundled.
