Goings on in the El Dorado County Foothills areas

Congratulations to Cameron Park resident Sandy Follett for being selected to be a part of the Windland Smith Rice Exhibition at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. Her photograph, Tunnel View Rainbow – Yosemite, is one of 48 images featured in the exhibit. This competition has become one of the most highly respected and visually compelling nature photography competitions in the world.

On March 2, El Dorado resident Tracy Rhine was appointed as the new deputy director of Legislative and Policy Review for the California Department of Consumer Affairs. Rhine previously served as the assistant executive officer and staff to the Board of Behavioral Sciences, was a consultant to the California State Assembly Committee on Business, Professions and Consumer Protection as well as to the Speaker’s Office of Member Services. Congrats!

Another congratulations goes to El Dorado Hills’ Oak Ridge High School student Corbin Gomez who took first place in California’s Poetry Out Loud contest this past March. He now goes on to represent California in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals on May 13-15 in Washington D.C. We wish all the best to Corbin!.

Applications are now available for local non-profit/charitable organizations to apply for a 2012 financial grant from Soroptimist International of Cameron Park and El Dorado Hills. This annual grant program offers direct support for specific projects. To request an application, email [email protected]; the deadline for completed applications to be received is May 15.

On April 10, the Cameron Park Rotary Community Observatory hosted a ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony to recognize the donation of the new GenCorp Foundation telescope. The new equipment will provide unprecedented views of the skies and educational opportunities for the general public, local students and visiting astronomers. The Community Observatory can be found adjacent to the El Dorado Center of Folsom Lake College in Placerville, just off Green Valley Road. For details, visit communityobservatory.com.

The 2012 El Dorado County Fair is coming to town! All livestock and non-livestock entry guides are now available online. Livestock entry forms are due by 4 p.m. on May 5; most other entry forms are due by 4 p.m. on May 11. For more information, visit eldoradocountyfair.org.

The El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce is proud to offer scholarships to the class of 2013 graduating seniors from Ponderosa and Oak Ridge High Schools who plan to continue their education by attending a university, college or vocational school. Interested students can pick up an application at the career centers of both high schools, in the Chamber office, or online; the deadline is early April 2013.
