With a name like The Shoestring, one might get the impression the plates at this Placerville joint are puny.

Turns out the folks behind the Broadway mainstay are anything but small fries. Known for serving up chili-drenched burgers and hot dogs of the finger lickin’ variety, this old school eatery has been in business since 1959 and boasts a five-star rating on Urbanspoon. Placerville may have changed in the past 50-plus years, but The Shoestring remains the same, and trust me, that’s a good thing. A recent visit to the local favorite found me on the hunt for a salty snack, and I scanned the menu board in search of something slightly less filling than a bacon cheeseburger. When my eyes landed on the Shoestring Sampler, I knew I’d found the one. With its 12-piece mix of onion rings, jalapeño poppers, and mozzarella and zucchini sticks, this dish has a little something for everyone – assuming everyone loves a plate of deep-fried deliciousness for less than 5 bucks. Each crunchy, well-seasoned bite was delicious on its own, but a side of ranch dressing took my experience to a whole new level. The Shoestring’s cuisine makes mouths water any time of year, but visit when the weather’s fair to take advantage of this roadside delight’s patio seating.
