What was once The Country Kitchen is now Jessie’s Café, a cozy roadside spot specializing in breakfast and lunch favorites.

Whether you’re looking for a plate of pancakes, a cheeseburger with fries or a hot cup of chicken noodle soup, there’s something for every taste and budget. Despite the selection, I was still surprised to find a plate of cupcakes making eyes at me during my first visit. I tried to resist, but the more I focused on my turkey melt, the more those little cakes called my name. In the end, I decided I couldn’t leave without one (or two) of Jessie’s Black & White Cupcakes. Topped with buttercream frosting and a dash of mini chocolate chips, this $2 treat gives pricier competitors a real run for their money. The cake was moist and flavorful without sacrificing structure (because no one likes a crumbly cupcake) and although I’ve never been a big frosting fan, this version achieved a pleasant, non-cloying sweetness. With specialty cupcakes available individually or by the dozen, Jessie’s the only name you need to know when searching for something to satiate your sweet tooth. Jessie’s Café, 1772 Pleasant Valley Road, Placerville, 530-621-0780.
