Better Foods Deli

Whether it’s eggs, bacon and cheese atop an English muffin; classic grilled cheese on sliced white (sans crust); or a Reuben with sauerkraut, one thing is certain – I love sandwiches.

After a recent visit to Better Foods Deli, I came to treasure them even more.

 Walking into the delicatessen, my eyes were greeted with the atmosphere one would expect from a 40-year-old family-owned and operated establishment – a pleasant staff greeting customers by name, mementos from local sports teams decorating the walls, and the hum of a TV providing comforting background noise.

Instantly, my gaze met the menu board and deli case featuring homemade desserts, salads, marinated olives and more. Faced with a delicious dilemma over what Italian-inspired sub to order, I turned to the sandwich artist behind the counter for advice. Her assistance and menu knowledge inspired my friend and I to select the Hot Pastrami and Meatball sandwiches, as well as the Creole Potato Salad. With plans for a mid-day picnic in the park, we got our order to go.

Lunch in tow, my pal and I settled into a grassy knoll and unwrapped our perfectly crafted creations. On my Hot Pastrami, a subtle smear of mayonnaise and mustard added just-enough saucy goodness on the freshly-made sourdough roll; crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, crunchy red onion and tangy pickles fulfilled my veggie intake and added a nice burst of color; while the peppery pastrami and melted provolone was of the utmost quality. My friend’s Meatball sub was equally satisfying. Both were good to the last bite!

We ended our afternoon of chitchat and chow enjoying spoonfuls of potato salad. The varying elements of textures and flavors – brought on by the celery, crushed black pepper, spicy Creole mustard and vinegar – had my taste buds dancing for days.

Next time my stomach yearns for its one true love – a sandwich – I’ll let my craving lead me to the best deli in town…Better Foods.
