Fresh ingredients can really make a dish! That’s definitely the case at the newest (and only) Thai restaurant in Placerville; Taste of Thai.

My wife and I visited the restaurant one afternoon for an early dinner. It has been tastefully updated to easily transport you to a wonderful dining experience – dark wood cover the walls and decor, giving the whole place a nice ambiance.

Both my wife and I enjoy Thai food but have been left with a vacant spot in our dining choices to fulfill our cravings in Placerville until now. Taste of Thai has an extensive menu, filled with a wide selection of dishes and flavors…many of which were new to our palates.

To start, we both ordered our Thai dining staple: Thai Iced Tea, a must try, if you haven’t yet. Our food selection began with Pad Thai noodles with chicken, Basil Fried Rice, Po Pia Tod (fried spring rolls), and the highlight – one of the Chef’s Specials – the Spicy Seafood  Medley.

The fried rice, loaded with fresh green beans and veggies that weren’t overcooked, along with the addition of the Thai basil, was a very welcome twist to the standard fried rice. Spring rolls arrived hot, fresh and crisp; nothing overly greasy. But the hands-down star for both of us was the Spicy Seafood Medley. Any of the spicy dishes can be ordered in your preferred level of spice heat. New to the taste of Thai’s menu, we opted for the “medium” which was perfect. The mix of crispy fried shrimp, muscles, scallops and calamari tossed in a chili garlic sauce with fresh Thai basil and bell peppers had multiple layers of flavor.

Taste of Thai also offers a large selection of curries, stir fries, lunch specials and traditional soups.

With flavors unique to Thai cuisine, there’s no doubt, Taste of Thai tastily fills a void in the area! •
