Steve Wallen, owner and president of Steve Wallen Swim School, has a passion for teaching children how to swim.

He often teaches those with special needs, but insists on the importance of not treating them any differently. “They’re just like everyone else,” he explains. “Whatever kid comes to my swim school, we will teach them how to swim.” A one-time competitive swimmer and water polo player, Wallen has taught swimming for more than 20 years, although his business got a modest start: “I had a pool in my backyard. I taught first my friends’ kids, then my kids, then the neighbors.’ It just kept going from there.”

Once his business grew beyond the capacity of his backyard pool, he moved to El Dorado Hills to build the school, which has served the community since its grand opening in January of 2008. The school offers a plethora of activities for children and adults of all ages and skill levels, including those with special needs. In addition, Wallen is a member of the El Dorado Hills Chamber of Commerce, and makes donations to local schools every year.
