As a former U.S. Naval flight surgeon, Dr. Randy West has seen more adventure than most people see in a lifetime.

In his 16 years with the Navy, West flew jets in countries such as Korea, Japan and the Philippines, all while overseeing the health of his squadron. “I loved it,” he says. “You had to be the best of the best.” Now a member of the Inactive Ready Reserve (IRR), West continues to fulfill his passion for flying as an honorary member of the Blue Angels, the Navy’s flight demonstration squadron.

In addition, West is a busy osteopathic family practice physician and board member of the OPSC (Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons of California). In his practice, West fights against declining standards in the medical field by advocating a holistic approach, which purports to treat the causes, rather than simply the symptoms, of disease. “It’s about the mind, body and soul,” he explains.

Yet West also makes a point of spending time with his wife and three children. “I’m not as crazy as they think I am,” he says. “I have a passion for what I do, but I love spending my time with my family. [I’m] trying to keep that balance.”
