Megamind is a very slick hero animated adventure. It moves at a very brisk pace and is completely child safe.

Having said that I think by making such huge strides to make the movie child friendly, Megamind really missed the chance to be something truly special.

The introduction to the movie is excellent as we get to watch Megamind and his arch-nemesis Metro Man escape from their doomed worlds. The two end up in exact opposite environments: Metro Man in the lap of luxury with parents, Megamind in a jail raised by inmates. The narration during this scene is hysterical!

Once the film kicks in we witness Megamind finally prevail over his nemesis and gain control over the city. Megamind finds that winning isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be and discovers he longs for his battles with Metro Man. He concocts a plan to create a superhero to replace Metro Man by using Metro Man’s DNA. What Megamind didn’t expect is that his new superhero quickly decides to be a super villain. 
 

All of the menace is downplayed in the film making it suitable for younger viewers. The movie moves quickly scene to scene rarely allowing the emotions of the moment to set in. The action is fun and Megamind has some good comedy mixed in. It also avoids a lot of the pop culture references that annoy me in children’s movies, which was nice. 

I can’t help thinking that if Megamind had taken itself a little more seriously, much like the Incredibles did, it could have been a brilliant movie. The plot had some fantastic twists and the film presented its heroes and villains in original ways. But because it was content with being a “children’s” movie the film failed to really capitalize on all the great ideas they had going for it.

So while I thought Megamind was a good movie, it was frustrating because it had the potential to be so much more.
