To me, Chinese food is a lot like pizza – even if it’s bad, it’s still pretty good.

So when you find a restaurant serving mouth-watering and flavorful Chinese food that boasts great service…well, you just can’t keep it a secret! And that’s where Hop Sing Palace fits in.

On a chilly Friday night, a friend and I strolled Sutter Street, venturing in and out of the unique shops when hunger hit. A few steps further and we were at the front door of Hop Sing. As soon as you walk in, you feel like you’ve been transported into a distant world. The normal hustle and bustle of life disappears and your focus turns to your upcoming meal. When I noticed four parties of diners ahead of us, and just the one dining room with 10 tables, I started to worry we’d have a lengthy wait. Then my dinner bud informed me of a dining room with rose-colored walls hidden in the back, which is where we were seated about 15 minutes later.

We had browsed the menu as we waited for our table, so we were ready to order right away. First up? Potstickers! And in just about five minutes, our steaming-hot appetizer was on the table. Dipping the potstickers, which were jam-packed with pork and veggies, in soy sauce provided for a salty and savory taste. As we took our last bites, our entrée dishes were ready to join us.

Orange Chicken and Chicken Fried Rice were piled high on their respective plates. The Orange Chicken was perfectly battered for the crispy bites I so enjoy, and the orange glaze was a tangy treat when paired with fried rice.

As the final highlight of our dining experience, we left with two full take-out boxes of leftovers. And since the majority of the menu items are in the $7-$9 price range, Hop Sing is a real steal – I enjoyed this meal twice more!
