Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I’d say it was mutual. Our business philosophy is: “IQUEST” – Integrity, Quality, Enthusiasm, Service and Team Work. As an educator for 20 years, most recently working as a resource specialist for the past 11 years, I knew The Tutoring Center’s research-proven “Rotational Approach to Learning,” along with “one-to-one individualized instruction” was the best way to narrow a student’s skill gaps. I left my teaching job to purchase the franchise, because I believe I can make a bigger difference for my students now than I could in the classroom, especially as the budget cuts go deeper.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I recently joined the Roseville Chamber of Commerce and a committee called B.E.C.O.M.E. (Business, Educators, and Community Organized to Maximize Education). I hope to use my 20 years of classroom experiences to help Placer County schools maintain their excellence.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

I escape into nature. I’ll go to the mountains and hike with my two German shepherds and friends. I love the smell of the tall pines, the clean air and the smogless blue skies. If I can’t get to my favorite place, I just go to my backyard and listen to the water fountain, water my flowers and plants, or listen to the songbirds. Since my yard backs up to an oak grove, there are nesting red-tailed hawks, great horned owls and flocks of wild turkeys. It is relaxing and I can let go of stress.

What’s your biggest job perk?

The feeling when I finally see the light bulb come on for a child who has struggled with a concept and suddenly he/she smiles and says, “I get it!” Or, when a child arrives at the Center smiling because they love coming so much.
