About three months before Robert Goss was supposed to go on a two-week bike tour from Oregon to Mexico, he was diagnosed with cancer.

“My friend and I were asked frequently if we were raising money, and we said, ‘No, we weren’t,’” Goss says. “Then, ironically, I had my experience with cancer.” Fortunately, it was caught early, and Goss only needed surgery before he embarked on the 1,100-mile trek a few years ago. So, just days before they took off, the two buddies decided to take donations. In only three days, they raised $2,500 for LIVESTRONG, Lance Armstrong’s cancer-research foundation.

As demonstrated by his regular contributions to LIVESTRONG, the bike-racing photos hanging in his office and the 20 or so races he competes in each year, cycling is more than just a hobby for Goss, Director of Folsom’s Parks and Recreation Department.

For 15 of the 17 years he has worked for Folsom, he’s concentrated on expanding the town’s bike trails. Now reaching 35 miles, the trails receive the spotlight treatment every September during Folsom Cyclebration, a weekend festival of bike rides and races.

“Life happens at a different pace when you’re on a bike. You see more, hear more, smell more,” he says. And one thing is clear – Goss is certainly having the ride of his life.
