Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

I make custom baby names to match baby nurseries. It found me. About four years ago, my former roommate was pregnant and I wanted to give her the “perfect” baby gift that was personal and unique from anything else. I decided to make her daughter’s name to match the nursery bedding. Then I made another for a pregnant co-worker, followed by another friend…and it just evolved from there. It got to be an expensive hobby and everyone I knew wanted me to make them one…so I turned it into a business.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

Once a customer places an order I become extremely involved in making it exactly the way they want. I stay in constant contact with them (through email) and send a “preview” picture before the name is finalized — to make sure that it’s exactly what they want and then they can also let me know of any changes they would like to be made.

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?

In business, my dad. He has owned his own business for as long as I can remember and comes up with various business ideas. As soon as he has one, he does everything he can to make it happen. His passion is something I find amazing!

What’s your biggest job perk?

Making my customers happy. I love to get an email after a customer has received their name – telling me how much they love it, how perfect it looks and how it completes their child’s nursery. There’s nothing I love in my job more than that.

What’s your favorite local event that you go to?

The “Veggie Chase” – a race for kids of all ages that takes place at Hagen Park in Rancho Cordova. My son competed in the “Toddler Trot” at the 2008 event and this year I signed my daughter up for the “Diaper Dash.” I really like any events that pertain to children, especially when they have activities for kids of all ages.

If you could be any other profession what would it have been?

Interior Design. I absolutely loved decorating my kids’ rooms and think I did a pretty decent job. When we bought our house, I had a blast going room-to-room painting and decorating. I would love to be able to do that on a day-to-day basis!
