“I hope people vote me bald!” says Roni Stroud.

Although this may seem like an odd statement, it makes perfect sense in context. You see, Stroud is riding on the Kiwanis Club of Folsom’s float in the 2011 Tournament of Roses Parade. In an effort to make the event even more purposeful and helpful to others, which is in perfect alignment with Stroud’s giving nature as a “professional volunteer,” she has turned the float ride into a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Family House.

“I knew I was going to be riding on the float but my stomach wasn’t settled about it,” says Stroud. “As soon as I asked myself what I should be doing with this opportunity, a 9-year-old girl’s face came into my vision. She was bald when I met her and she stayed with her family at the Kiwanis Family House. This girl, now 11, fought Leukemia and is an inspiration. This vision showed me that I was supposed to turn it into a fundraiser.”

Stroud designed a Web site, locksforthehouse.com, and is accepting sponsorships to be donated to the Kiwanis Family House. On the site, people can vote for her to shave her head prior to the float ride, to be seen by over 400 million viewers. She hopes to raise $100,000 and lots of awareness about this unique home for families of people staying or receiving treatment at UC Davis Hospital in Folsom.

“Although I’m hoping to raise money, you can’t really put a price on the success of the fundraiser because the effect reverberates,” says Stroud. “Mostly, I really want to raise awareness and get more Kiwanis Clubs to build Family Homes. Ours is the only one in the world and it has been in existence for 26 years.”
