As your summer tan starts to fade, you notice new signs of aging left by the sun. Don’t panic.
It’s never too late to achieve beautiful skin. All skin is affected by health, environment, stress and genetics. But a combination of professional treatments and at-home products can provide radiant results for both men and women. “For optimal results, anti-aging products should be chosen in accordance with each individual’s specific aging type and should also add to the health of the skin’s barrier,” says Howard Murad, M.D., FAAD, CEO and founder of Murad Skincare.
Start with the basics: pump up hydration and reduce sun exposure. Aging skin loses its ability to retain moisture, so it appears more wrinkled and dull. Also, the sun’s rays play a major factor in aging, so limiting sun exposure and using SPF daily is critical. Starting in your 20s, professionals recommend a daily regimen of cleanser, moisturizer and sunblock.
In Your 30s
“Use an SPF and moisturizer to retain hydration, along with exfoliation twice per week to keep the outer layer of skin fresh and rosy,” says Mary Ekiss, CEO of the Faces365 Inc. franchise, with its flagship spa in Roseville. Also, you can consider reversing sun damage with non-ablative laser treatments such as IPL (intense pulse light) to reverse hyper-pigmentation from your skin.
“You can help stop wrinkles before they start by receiving treatments of Botox to areas such as frown lines and crows feet,” says Jessica Finsley, a nurse practitioner with Skin 360 Medical Aesthetics in Folsom. “As you get older, these areas are more difficult to treat and require more product.”
In Your 40s
Genetic aging has kicked in; therefore, a three-step regimen of cleanser, treatment product and moisturizer is in order. Use products with anti-oxidants, anti-inflammatories and hydrators to bring out a more youthful look. It’s also a good time to start lip and eye treatments and collagen builders. In addition, some skin care professionals recommend microdermabrasion and peels to address sun damage and emerging lines.
Myriam Liberman from The Tiger’s Eye Skincare in Folsom says that these treatments aren’t for everyone, though. She offers a natural exfoliation process through her Native American clay-based facials to exfoliate, nourish and hydrate the skin in conjunction with The Tiger’s Eye’s proprietary aloe-vera-based natural skin care products to promote healthy skin at any age.
In Your 50s and Beyond
Follow the treatments that you’ve found work best for your skin with increased frequency to support collagen production and boost hydration. Some professionals suggest ingredients to look for when product shopping include Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), glycolic, lactic, and tartaric or malic acids which exfoliate, stimulate skin repair, increase collagen production and improve elasticity. Likewise, Coenzyme Q-10 repairs sun damage, energizes new cell growth and smooths skin. In addition, Vitamin C, Retinol, amino acids and peptides all support collagen production.
“Retin A does a great job at preventing the breakdown of collagen. Choose .05 percent or higher,” says Dr. Celia Remy of the Vitality Medical Laser & Skin Clinic in Folsom and Granite Bay. Also, Remy suggests seeing a physician for prescription-grade products since under law, products that penetrate through the entire depth of the skin must have some level of care given to them. But these products, unlike those sold at retail stores, “are strong enough to create change in the tissue, give true skin health and longer lasting changes,” says Dr. Remy. Beware of products containing sodium lauryl sulfate, and over-the-counter bars of soap, which can be drying and irritating. “Avoid products with artificial fragrance and color, petrochemicals and sulfates,” adds Ekiss.
