Redwood City, California is known as a hub for technology industry headquarters, but it has much to offer those who wish to escape gadget-ville for a blissful weekend away – exquisite dining, arts and community events, and activities for everyone.

A tight-knit, small community, this lesser-known city by the bay offers great attractions to the laid-back traveler and to families seeking an educational leisure trip. Mild year-round temperatures and proximity to all that a northern California address affords, provide an ideal destination for anyone seeking a peaceful weekend away.

ART AND CULTURE

The arts scene in Redwood City amplifies with seasonal and annual festivals. This month, the Third Annual Salsa Festival returns, with not only the favorite tortilla chip accoutrement, but also the hip-shaking moves of Salsa dancing. The festivities include live music, dance lessons, tastings, a “Best Salsa Competition” and more. Family fun will abound as chalk art and street performers entertain attendees. The year-round arts calendar includes weekend festivals, gallery tours, movies, music and art, all “on the square” – the Courthouse Square – Redwood City’s hub for downtown activities.

Redwood City has rarely been compared to the French Riviera, until now, of course. Experience true French hospitality, style and cuisine at Sofitel San Francisco Bay. Part of the French family of luxury hotels, its palatial lobby and chic décor combine modern and classic in authentic French fashion. Guests are greeted with “bonjour” and cordially addressed by last name. Overlooking the lagoon, the property offers an exclusive waterfront running and walking path and a peaceful backdrop for cool evenings on the peninsula. Sofitel also houses an area favorite dining hotspot, Bay 223, serving up authentic French fare in a chic dining room.

EAT AND DRINK

Journey from France to Italy and eat at Donato Enoteca in Redwood City’s downtown. Executive Chef and native Italian, Donato Scotti offers a truly authentic Italian dining experience that’s nothing short of amazing. His menu offers honest contemporary Italian cuisine, and the space allows for varied dining styles – from casual to elegant. The food is fresh, innovative and uniquely Italian (menu includes dishes from all regions of Italy), not to mention their wine list is superb. Also scattered throughout downtown are locally owned cafes and bistros serving up an eclectic mix of American and international fare. The Living Room, a wine and beer lounge, provides a casual and fun atmosphere where you can literally plop down on a couch and enjoy your favorite adult beverage and bar fare.

FUN AND GAMES

Redwood City only encompasses 35 square miles, 15 of which are water. Away from the traffic and noise of the city, its quaint small-town feel is enhanced by its offering of unique activities. Ideal for educational and interactive fun, visit The Marine Science Center for a tour and explore natural wonders while learning about sea life. Stroll through downtown and visit historic buildings, including the San Mateo County History Museum and the Fox Theatre, or participate in a weekend open-air market, live concert or theatrical performance. Providing indoor entertainment in the heart of town, the Redwood City Roller Rink has been a community staple for over 50 years. Outfit the family in skates and enjoy a retro evening complete with games and hits from the last five decades.

Redwood City is the ideal place to visit for anyone needing to escape for a relaxing mini-vacation – and experience a little Latin America, France and Italy along the way.
