Just off Highway 50 at Sly Park Road exit, take a left onto Pony Express Trail and you’ll find yourself at The Haven Restaurant in Pollock Pines.

A great detour and pit stop for those going to the river, lake, or en route to other activities in and around the Sierra Foothills, this no-frills relaxing food respite offers not only a perfect patio for escaping the heat, but also dishes out fare high on taste, not on price.

Nowadays at The Haven (they’ve gone through a few owners over the restaurant’s many years), the menu commands tough choices to be made between the carefully orchestrated, yet unpretentious, stick-to-the-ribs recipes; on their dinner menu, the following items caught my attention: Chicken Parmesan, Deep Fried Eastern Scallops, and one of their specialties – Fish and Chips. However, dinner was not in the cards for me and on a last minute trip out to lunch, I decided to stop in and see what this “haven” was all about…since, I heard from friends that this place is a gold mine (for all food lovers – both local and those passing through town) just off the beaten path.

After deciding on and devouring the Haven Chicken Special, which is on both their lunch and dinner menu, I must say: the rumors are true. My special plate included charbroiled chicken breasts completely covered with melted Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms and buttery fresh avocado – all alongside a nice garden salad; choose from soup, salad or fries for your side. The chicken was not overly seasoned, which is key, and together with the salad, this combination is a great summer supper.

If there had been any room left in my stomach, my pick for a sweet finish would have been the New York Lemon Cheesecake…it sounded light and delicious. Stop by Wednesday through Saturday for your fill.
