Two words describe Back Forty Texas BBQ: Fall-off-the-bone tender (well, maybe a few more than two).

Back Forty Texas BBQ has been doing award-winning, slow cooked barbecue since 1978, and they’ve brought their menu to Shingle Springs, located just off the freeway on Durock Road.

While on the hunt for good BBQ, our family stopped by Back Forty on a Tuesday night to pick up dinner. We were delighted to find out that Tuesdays are Back Forty’s “Family Night,” where kids eat free with a paying adult! The kids ordered a rib plate and a smoked sausage (both on their “Small Grub” menu), and each came with a small green salad, choice of bread, a drink, along with a chocolate pudding desert at the end. One of their regular bread choices is Back Forty’s Strawberry Bread – similar to cornbread but with a sweet hint of strawberry flavor – which turned out to be an instant hit with our son.

My wife wanted to sample a bit of everything so she ordered their Texas Combination. The combo came with a trio of smoky baby-back ribs, BBQ chicken and “Juicy Beef” (slices of tender beef). She decided to go with the Texas-style sides, which included baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad. The Chunk O’ Beef dinner caught my eye – a large cut of their juicy beef brisket, along with the California-style sides – house salad, baked potato and a mini-loaf. My wife wouldn’t share her ribs, but luckily, Back Forty allows you to add a side of ribs to any dinner for a small charge. One of the highlights not to miss is the tangy BBQ sauce with just enough heat to help wake up your taste buds without drowning out the subtle smokiness of the meat. Healthy portions ensured that we all took home enough to enjoy later.

Back Forty Texas BBQ also offers catering for events and carryout, and even offers their mouth-watering BBQ sauce bottled for your own backyard enjoyment. Next time you’re in the neighborhood, bring an appetite and desire for tender, slow cooked BBQ...and make sure to try the sauce!
