Mari Wells Coyle, winemaker at David Girard Vineyards in Placerville, has a bright and sunny disposition that clearly influences her creative genius.

Although she was born in California, Coyle grew up in Washington. She returned to California for college and earned her degrees in viticulture and enology from UC Davis. She apprenticed at wineries in the Russian River area and even in New Zealand. She brings 10 years of experience to her post at David Girard. “I love the whole process of creating wines,” Coyle shares, “especially the creative aspects.”

Coyle lives in Rescue with her husband, Dan, and two-and-a-half-year-old son. Because Dan is a Fire Captain in Menlo Park, California, Coyle focuses most of her time away from work on her son; but as a family, the Coyles ski, white water raft, and do just about anything outdoors.

Coyle feels that winemaking is especially rewarding because it allows her to bring together imagination and science to produce acclaimed Rhone wines. As an avid cook, she also enjoys teaching classes in which she explains how to combine wine with favorite dishes. While some winemakers may lock themselves away, Coyle has a warm approachable style that reflects her love for her work and her pride in sharing wine with the world.
