Most people may not be aware that Jeff Starsky, 13-year-mayor of Folsom, survived a major bicycling accident in 1991.

The accident, which occurred while he was commuting to work on the bike trail from Folsom to Downtown Sacramento, left him with a broken back and a chance of never walking again. “That is a moment that changed me and made me a different person,” says Starsky. “I recovered fully from the broken back and the concussion. I don’t even remember any of it so I wasn’t scared to get back on the bike, but I always look back on that and say I’m lucky.”

Starsky not only continues to cycle, but he also enjoys running, golfing, skiing and kayaking on Lake Natoma. “My wife and I are pretty recreational so we get involved in lots of outdoor activities,” he says. “We also love to participate in all of the fun events held in Folsom, such as the Fun Runs and the Rodeo.”

It’s apparent that Starsky is equally as passionate about his career in law and politics. “As a lawyer, I love the trial system. I like advocacy and arguing on behalf of my clients. It’s a fun job to be able to persuade juries to advance your clients’ positions,” he says. “For the Mayor’s side, I really love representing the City of Folsom and making sure what we do protects our residents’ culture, life, living standard and environment…by doing things that they’re sometimes not even aware of. I believe in the cause of Folsom. My goal is to recession-proof our city.”
