It was just another Monday, but not just another lunch.

I found myself in a quandary when trying to choose a place for a good sandwich. With time constraints galore, I often just run into Subway when this craving hits, but after sampling Acorn Café’s pastries in the recent past, I figured that a sandwich selection here would be a sumptuous and safe bet.

The fairly new Acorn Café, located just across from City Hall on Natoma Street, is convenient for both a morning coffee stop, as well as a place to dine in for scratch-made, deli-style fare. Inside the cozy eatery, it didn’t take long for me to spot what I wanted. In addition to a daily soup special, Acorn also boasts a yummy sandwich creation, compliments of the chef’s mood that day. Hats off to the chef’s imagination on that particular Monday! My freshly shaved ham (I watched it being sliced), roasted red peppers, caramelized onions and Feta cheese on grilled focaccia was definitely special. I must admit that I often have a hankering for ham–especially the kind we have for Christmas dinner–and to my delight Acorn’s high-quality meat was sweet, savory and oh so similar. The Feta cheese and peppers were icing on the cake, and a flavor combination that I won’t soon forget.

On my way out the door, I couldn’t help but notice the salads of two fellow lunchers…they were quite large and artfully topped with black beans, corn, avocado and too much more to name. When I asked the gal what she ordered, she proudly pointed to the Southwest Chicken Salad on the menu board. Now I know what I’m trying next time!
