Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?

In 2001, we moved from the SF Bay Area where I had spent 15 years as a software consultant. The plan was to start a business as well as a simpler life. After researching synthetic greens for our new house I decided to build my own, and in the process started Sierra Synthetic Putting Greens and Lawns. The first year or two was spent building greens for friends, neighbors and anyone I could convince to take a chance with a new company. In 2003, we got a huge break and built a green for Kevin Sutherland, a local PGA pro. This gave us the credibility we needed to establish ourselves as the premier putting green builder in the Sacramento area. Since then we have expanded our products to include synthetic grass as well as bocce ball courts.

What is the best part of doing business in this community?

The people. They are great and put a high value on outdoor family entertainment.

How are you involved with both the community and your customer?

I coach my son’s basketball and baseball teams as well as help out with my daughter’s soccer team.

Why is your staff the best in the business?

Not only do we employ staff with all the needed skills – carpet installation, landscaping and golf expertise – we also treat each project like it is our own. We can explain the different types of turf to help you decide what is best for you. Then we work with you through each step of the process to insure a spectacular result.

What is the best thing about being the boss?

Knowing that hard work and honesty will result in success.

What life accomplishments are you most proud of?

My happy, healthy family.

Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?

My father. He had the ability to treat everyone as equals.

Where do you go when the going gets tough?

The golf course. It helps me realize how good life is, and how all problems have solutions.

And finally, customer service is…?

Our focus! Our goal is to slowly build the company based on reputation. Every customer should be able to provide an excellent reference.
