Kenna Son, a fifth grader at St. Albans Country Day School, never imagined that a small class assignment would earn her the coveted first place prize in the Roseville Centennial Student Essay Contest.

But that is exactly what happened. This year Roseville celebrated its 100th Birthday and in honor of the event, the City of Roseville offered an essay contest in which students could write about what they believed Roseville would be like 100 years from now. When Kenna’s teacher heard about the competition she decided it would be a great activity for the entire class to participate in, and hopefully learn something about the history of Roseville in the process. Utilizing the City of Roseville’s Web site and her love of the mall, Kenna’s essay touched on the growth of education, development, and population in Roseville in 2109. While Kenna says that the writing process “was hard, but a lot of fun,” she is grateful for the experience.

An avid soccer and volleyball player, (she plays on the Placer United Soccer team, and her school volleyball team) she is currently uncertain as to whether or not she will enter any more writing competitions. But she is proud of what she has accomplished, “I felt happy and shocked that I won...and excited. I didn’t expect to win.”
