Nevada City

As you leave the hustle and bustle of the highways and Interstate behind you, roll down the windows and take a deep breath. That delightful scent, my friends, is pine. And there is no better time to get a refreshing whiff than Christmastime. Welcome to Nevada City – the “Carmel of the Sierra Foothills.” And if you’ve ever been to Carmel, you know what a compliment that is. Nestled among pine trees and Victorian homes, Nevada City boasts a population hovering around 3,000 residents, and they are some of the friendliest people you will meet.

Rich History
One of the better-known reasons for visiting Nevada City is its reputation as a historic mining town and surrounding cultural history. Among some of the more popularly visited sites are the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum, the Firehouse Museum #1, Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park and the Miners Foundry Cultural Center. Malakoff Diggins, home to California’s largest hydraulic mine, offers incredible views, a 7,847-foot bedrock tunnel that once served as a drain, a museum and visitor center complete with exhibits on life in the old mining town – and you can even camp out or rent a cabin! 530-265-2740, parks.ca.gov.
