For Tiffany Murray, being a Girl Scout is more than just selling cookies. By the age of 16, Murray had spearheaded three major projects to help education programs in Granite Bay earning her the prestigious bronze, silver and gold medal awards for excellence in community service.
For one of her projects, she selected Woodbridge Elementary, a local Title I school, and arranged to deliver backpacks full of school supplies for each student entering in the fall. “The principal of the school told me that the students’ home financial situation makes them disadvantaged,” Tiffany explains. “They can’t complete their homework.” So to help with this, Tiffany went door-to-door to local businesses and neighborhoods for weeks, gathering donations of vital school supplies.
In addition, Murray started a reading incentive program at Sierra Gardens Elementary School, where she helped to raise funds and get volunteers for the North Roseville Recreation, Education and Creativity Center (REC). Murray’s efforts greatly assisted the center in continuing its mission to provide an after-school refuge for kids in neighborhoods with high levels of gang activity.
“I believe that more students should help out, look at their community, and see what they can do. Even helping one kid will affect that kid [for] the rest of their life,” Tiffany says. “Children are tomorrow’s leaders, and if we help the community, we help the country, the world.
